"The earth is the Lord's and all that is in it…" (Ps.24:1a)

Care for creation is the responsibility of having dominion over the earth. Dominion places humans in a strong but not exclusive role within nature. It implies not domination but concern and wise tending of the gifts we have received. To that end the California Council of Churches works to provide background information on both the scriptural and liturgical foundations of stewardship and on practical projects that can make us more responsible in the ways we care for our world and all its resources.

Over the recent years we have had projects that not only helped communities deal with the high cost of energy but with ways to conserve precious resources. We promote sustainability in not only energy but also food production and consumption, and the uses of non-renewable resources including agricultural lands, minerals, air, and water. We seek to defend natural resources from degradation through pollution and wanton extraction, and we look to promote education around policies that achieve that protection for God's creation.

We have encouraged our congregations to be involved in 'green' projects within their own houses of worship and to reach out to their surrounding communities with that information and ways to make achievement of sustainable consumption more feasible, especially for those in poverty.
